Witness Testimony

James Blyth testified that, as a young man with Type 1 diabetes and Lyme disease, he sought medical advice before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine during a period of strict mandates in Saskatchewan. He stated that he was not granted a medical exemption and felt pressure from family and public restrictions to proceed with vaccination. Within days of receiving his first dose, he reported experiencing chest tightness, shallow breathing, body aches, and a sensation of heart irregularity, prompting emergency room visits. He indicated that his concerns were dismissed by attending physicians.
He described persistent symptoms over several weeks, followed by severe insomnia that led to multiple emergency visits and eventual admission to a psychiatric ward. There, he was prescribed high-dose quetiapine, reaching 800 milligrams daily, which he stated was necessary to induce sleep. He remained on the medication for approximately three to four months. During this period, he reported significant sedation and functional impairment, as well as worsened blood glucose control requiring increased insulin dosages due to medication side effects.
Mr. Blyth stated that a naturopathic physician later suggested the vaccine may have triggered a flare of his Lyme disease, possibly involving brain inflammation, and prescribed antibiotics. He reported gradual improvement and was able to discontinue quetiapine. He testified that his adverse reaction was not formally reported, that he received no information about compensation programs, and that he experienced frustration over what he described as a lack of accountability and acknowledgment from healthcare providers.
