Main Topic

Spousal suicide following workplace COVID-19 vaccine mandate, alleged workplace coercion, and absence of informed consent framework.

One Line Summary

Husband testifies that workplace vaccine mandate pressure and alleged coercion preceded his wife’s suicide eleven days after her final workday.

Synopsis

James Jones testified regarding the death of his wife, Sandra Jones (née Veldhousen), a BC Transit bus driver in Victoria, British Columbia. He stated that she had worked for BC Transit for approximately 13 years and was certified to teach anti-bullying and anti-harassment training. According to his testimony, she was hesitant to receive the COVID-19 vaccine due to concerns about potential effects on pregnancy, as the couple had discussed starting a family. He stated that BC Transit was not provincially required to impose a mandate but chose to implement one internally, and that she sought informed consent and pursued possible exemption options.
Jones testified that his wife experienced workplace pressure, intimidation, and lack of union support during the mandate period. He stated that she maintained a written log documenting what he described as bullying and coercion from colleagues and union representatives. Her final day of work was November 31, 2021, and he testified that eleven days later she died by suicide. He described discovering her in her vehicle after a welfare check was conducted and stated that her death occurred during a period when public messaging emphasized vaccination as the primary solution to the pandemic.
He further testified that neither BC Transit nor her union provided meaningful support following her death and that, in his view, there was no credible framework for informed medical consent within the corporation. He questioned who authorized the mandate within BC Transit and what medical qualifications those individuals held. Jones characterized the period as the darkest time of his life and connected his wife’s emotional distress to workplace mandate pressures and the broader social climate at the time.
