Inquiry into the Appropriateness and Efficacy of the COVID-19 Response in Canada; November 2023
Main Topic
Testimony describing onset of recurrent exertion-related blackouts approximately three months after a Pfizer vaccination, resulting in reduced physical capacity and ongoing occupational impairment.
One Line Summary
Land surveyor Steven Kiedyk testified that about three months after receiving one Pfizer shot, he began experiencing exertion-related blackouts that significantly reduced his physical work capacity.
Synopsis
Steven Kiedyk testified that he has worked as a land surveyor since 2007 and was physically active prior to vaccination, regularly attending the gym and completing a marathon in 2019. At age 35, he described himself as healthy with no prior medical conditions. Although initially reluctant to vaccinate, he received one Pfizer dose in early July 2021 due to social pressure and exclusion from normal activities. He did not receive a second dose.
In the second week of October 2021, while playing recreational basketball, he suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed. He testified that since that event he has experienced repeated episodes of vision loss, tingling sensations, and near-blackouts triggered by physical exertion. In the early months, these episodes reportedly occurred up to three times per day. He stated that while they may have slightly improved, he now carefully regulates physical strain to avoid collapse.
Kiedyk explained that his work requires driving three-foot iron survey bars into the ground with a sledgehammer to mark property corners. Prior to October 2021, he could install approximately 12 bars per day; afterward, his capacity dropped to three to five bars due to fatigue and the need for frequent breaks. He has not sought medical evaluation, citing loss of trust in the medical system, but did attempt to report his side effects through an online reporting form. He testified that his symptoms remain ongoing and materially impact both his work performance and daily life.
