Witness Testimony

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson testified that Canada’s response to COVID-19 was characterized by panic in the face of an unknown threat, which he argued led to an abdication of political responsibility in favor of public health authorities. He stated that political leaders and citizens deferred ethical and policy decisions to experts, transforming public health officials into de facto political decision-makers. He characterized this shift as a failure of democratic accountability and compared aspects of the response to authoritarian policy modeling.
Peterson testified that governments suspended fundamental rights including freedom of travel, freedom of association, bodily autonomy, and freedom of speech. He alleged that media, government, and pharmaceutical corporations colluded to amplify fear, and that public opinion polling was used to justify restrictions while later claiming decisions were based solely on science. He criticized mask mandates, stating that randomized controlled trials did not support their effectiveness, and argued that vaccine approvals bypassed standard scientific caution.
He further testified that pandemic policies caused significant economic disruption, inflationary pressures, supply chain instability, educational harm to children, and long-term erosion of public trust in science and public health institutions. He referenced Sweden’s approach as an alternative model and stated that leaders failed to consider the law of unintended consequences, arguing that the response may have produced harms greater than the threat itself.
